For roofing systems that were not installed with the proper overhang into the gutter system, you can install drip edge under the first layer of roofing shingles, extend into the gutter system and seal the top edge of the drip edge with cement. Roofing systems without the proper roof overhang can cause numerous problem including but not limited to rotten decking, fascia, soffit, siding, soil erosion and even basement flooding.
In order to install drip edge the right way, the following must be done;
- Corrosion resistant drip edge
- 36 gauge or heavier
- Aluminum or galvanized
- Apply to decking on eaves underneath the felt underlayment
- Apply on top of the underlayment along the rakes or gable ends of the roof.
- Reinforce with screws for proper preventative measures.
Local Building Codes for Drip Edge
It wasn’t until recently, the Georgia Building codes division followed the International Code Council and made drip edge a requirement.
